British Values

At St Leonard’s Primary School, we value the diversity of the backgrounds of all our pupils, families and the wider school community and strongly believe in upholding British values through all aspects of school life.

In all that we do, both academic and otherwise, we endeavour for our school family to develop an understanding of British values and a strong desire to uphold them both now and as future British citizens.

We promote British Values to reflect life in modern Britain. There are four values outlined;

  • Democracy
  • Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance of all religions/faiths.

British value: Democracy

A culture built upon freedom and equality, where everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities.

All children have the opportunity to make choices, they are encouraged to reflect upon their choices and to express their opinions in the appropriate manner knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

Our School Council work alongside our staff to ensure that the children’s voice is heard and has an impact on the day-to-day running of our school. The children discuss issues raised in class and suggest ideas for ways to improve aspects of their school experience.

Whole school:

  • Our School council and Eco council are all democratically elected to encourage the children to become involved in the decision making process.
  • School council support local community groups such as Walton le Dale Recreational society and discuss how we can make changes at both local and national level.
  • Children vote on aspects of school life that impacts them so they are involved in the decision making process.
  • Pupil surveys are completed which allow children to become involved in the decision making process and ensures they are listened to within school.
  • Teaching of our school vision – Independent, Inclusive, Inquiring and Inspirational
  • Special days and Royal events are celebrated for example the Platinum jubilee, King’s coronation and General and local elections. Our school is closed on voting days due to being a Polling station and this is explained to the children.
  • Pupil involvement in interviewing potential new staff such as the Deputy Headteacher role. The children understand that their voice is valued and they have a direct influence on decisions regarding their education.

British value: Rule of law

The need for rules to make a happy, safe and secure environment to live and work.

At St Leonard’s, our school rules are Ready, Respectful and Safe. We expect all children and staff to follow these. The rules are consistently taught and reinforced. Through these we demonstrate the need for respect and responsibility in our school.

In lessons and worship pupils are reminded of the need for rigorous routines and the positive impact the rules have on our learning and personal development. This helps us to extend the thinking of our children to wider national questions about the enforcement of laws, the fairness of the law and the way the Rule of Law has helped shape our society.

Our behaviour policy enables children to work within a framework of expectations and manage these. We actively teach children how to behave through our behaviour system and are proud of our restorative approach. We encourage the children to understand that fairness and equality cannot always be the case as some children need different levels of support, just as they do with their learning. We ensure that our children understand the moral implications of their choices and actions and paths they decide to choose.

Whole school:

  • Whole school teaching of our school rules – Ready, Respectful and Safe
  • Rigorous Behaviour and relationships policy which ensures our school rules and expectations are clear and fair. Our restorative approach helps children to understand right from wrong and the impact their behaviour has on those around them.

  • Parent/carers questionnaires and workshops relating to behaviour, safety – parents are listened to and their views are fed into our behaviour policy
  • Visits from PCSOs to explain their role within the community to keep everyone safe.
  • Implementing our procedures and protocols for dealing with any behavioural or bullying issues and the very rare incidents of racial, homophobic and other forms of discrimination, which demonstrates to pupils that we take these issues very seriously, mirroring the attitudes of British society.

British value: Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
Understanding that we all don’t share the same beliefs and values.

Respecting those values, ideas and beliefs of others whilst not imposing our own onto them.

Mutual Respect – The children at St Leonard’s are taught to be Respecful as one of our main three school rules. Our vision promotes inclusion and loving one another as Jesus did and this underpins all that we do and teach. All cultures and personalities are valued and respected. As a school, we celebrate multicultural Britain, and ensure that our children are aware of, and enthusiastic about, the incredible range of cultures and perspectives that shape our community. Our curriculum is embedded with opportunities to admire and learn from different voices and viewpoints.

Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs - We promote and celebrate diversity with our children, helping them to understand their place in our society and how they can collaborate with others to build a progressive and understanding tomorrow. Issues such as bullying, racism, gender inequality, tolerance, respect and prejudice are all discussed through lessons. Throughout our curriculum, children have opportunities to learn about and experience different cultures, from something as simple as getting a flavour of different cultures through food and dance, to an in depth exploration of different religions and societal groups.
