India Class (Y3)

Autumn 1

We have had such a fantastic start to India class. The children have settled in well, all being recognised and on the recognition board, learning routines and expectations quickly; we are so proud of them!
 

In English, the children explored the book ‘Cinnamon’ by Neil Gaiman. They looked at the different grammar skills in the book and produced some super writing. The children also worked really hard to learn the story of the Ghanaian Goldilocks and wrote their own versions.
In maths, the children have been learning different methods for addition and subtraction using numbers to 1000.
In RE, they have enjoyed learning about harvest. They explored the bible and where harvest is mentioned, as well as events around the world that celebrate harvest.

In DT, the children have made their own savoury tarts using seasonal ingredients. They have also looked at wearable technology and programming a micro-bit.
For black history week, we thought about the theme ‘Reclaiming the Narrative’.

The children focused on Mary Seacole and Harriet Tubman and produced some excellent art work.   
The children have been recognised for their resilience this half term and have been showed good listening skills while working and being kind to each other.

Summer 2

What a great year we have had in year 3!


The children have enjoyed learning our suspense story ‘Podkin One Ear’ and have learnt some new grammar skills, which they applied in their own suspense story. They have also written their own instructions, thinking about the layout and applying their new skills.

Year 3 have shown that they are independent and resilient in maths when learning about fractions, angles, lines and shape. Some children found the units quite tricky but they preserved and we are super proud of all of them.

The children have really enjoyed their history unit which focused on the question ‘What evidence is there that Ancient Egypt was the most advanced society in the world?’ The children researched the two different kingdoms, gods and goddesses, the pharaohs and daily life. With all their new knowledge, we had a class debate referring back to our enquiry question.

 

Year 3 have been learning about God’s wonderful world in science. We have been inquiring about the forces and magnets and investigated using real magnets. We have also looked at biodiversity, what it is and how we can stop it being destroyed.

The children have enjoyed learning and making their own ancient Egyptian scroll in art. We explored natural colours and how paper can be made from three pieces of equipment. The children really enjoyed making their own!

 
In RE, the children have been independent when learning about other faiths, such as Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism.  

 

It has been a pleasure to teach such a wonderful class this year. We hope you all have a lovely summer break.

Summer 1

 

The year 3 children have had a super half term.

The children have enjoyed learning our time slip story ‘The Scarab Beetle’ and have learnt some new grammar skills, which they applied in their own time-slip story. They used all their knowledge from previous history units to write some interesting descriptions.

Year 3 have shown that they are independent in maths when learning about money and time. They have explored with real money when totaling amounts in pounds and pence.

The children have really enjoyed their geography unit which focused on the question ‘What is the impact of earthquakes on people’s lives?’ We explored what earthquakes are and how they happen as well how an earthquake is measured.

Year 3 have been learning about God’s wonderful world in science. We have been inquiring about the different parts of a plant and their functions.

The children have enjoyed learning about mechanical systems in DT. They explored some pneumatic toys and then planned, built and evaluated their own.

In RE, the children have been independent when learning about the rules of living and created their own rules.

Spring 2 

 

 

We have had another super half term in year 3!

 

The children have loved learning our defeating the monster story ‘Smok the Dragon’ and have learnt some tricky grammar skills, which they applied in their own defeating the monster story.

 

We've showed great resilience in maths with some tricky units. We explored length and mass, learning how to convert between different units of measurement, as well as completing challenging word problems. We've continued to learn our 3, 4, 6 and 8 multiplication through songs, games and activities.

 

The children have absolutely loved our history unit all about the Romans. We looked at the question ‘What was the Roman Empire and how did it impact Britain and the wider world?’ They loved learning about the impact that the Romans had on Britain, exploring Boudicca and her life and looking at what Britain was like before the Romans invaded.

 

In science, we've been learning all about light. We learnt about light sources, the sun, how to protect ourselves from the sun and how we see.

 

The children have really enjoyed our art unit, looking at 3D shapes and sculptures. They worked with different materials and experimented, how they can be joined together by using only scissors. We learnt all about the famous artist, Sir Anthony Caro, and looked at the different purposes of his sculptures all around the world.


In RE, the children have been learning all about the Easter story and the question ‘Is the cross a symbol of sadness or joy?’ They then did a fantastic job of delivering the Easter worship in church using the story of The Three Trees.

Spring 1 

 

What a super half term we have had in India class!

 

In English, we've been looking at our dialogue toolkit and created our own warning stories. We've also looked at recounts and have written a detailed dairy entry of a time at school when we went on a visit/trip.   

 

We've loved our DT unit, constructing castles based on their features. All the children produced a fantastic final design.

 

In geography we focused on the question ‘What is the difference between a mountain and a volcano?’ We looked at how mountains and volcanos are formed and their features, as well as locating well known mountains on atlas.

 

In PSHE, we've been discussing careers and money. We really enjoyed careers day, where we listened to lots of different people in different kinds of jobs.

 

In science, we have been looking at fossils and soils. The children enjoyed learning about the process of fossilisation and exploring some real life fossils.

 

We've enjoyed the challenge of maths this half term. Everyone showed great resilience and perseverance when multiplying and dividing a two-digit number by a one-digit number.

 

We had a fantastic 'God's Big Picture' Day where we looked at the story of the Bible from the beginning right to the end! 

 

Overall, we have had a wonderful half term. We are looking forward to the next one already!

Autumn 2

We have had yet another excellent half-term in India class. All of the children have been recognised for showing great perseverance and resilience this half term and they have enjoyed plenty of recognition raves to celebrate their success.

In English, we have been focusing on the ‘setting’ toolkit. We have been describing the setting in our portal story ‘Elf Road’, as well as learning lots of grammar techniques that are included. The children then innovated the story and wrote their own.

In maths, we have been working on addition and subtraction and the different methods we could use to problem solve. We then moved on to learning multiplication and division.

In history, the children really enjoyed learning about the Stone Age. We looked at our enquiry question ‘How did life in Britain change from the Stone Age to the Iron Age?’ We learnt all about the different periods in the Stone Age, who the Cheddar man was and if there is any lasting impact from the Stone Age.

In science, we have been learning about rocks, the different types, their properties and grouping them.

We have loved reading our class novel, ‘The Abominable Snowman’ by Eva Ibbotson, which we will continue reading next half term.

Autumn 1

We have had such a fantastic start to India class. The children have settled in well, learning routines and expectations quickly; we are so proud of them!
In DT, the children loved learning about the different vitamins in different coloured fruits, as well as cutting them up and making their own kebabs.
In English, the children worked really hard to learn the story of the Ghanaian Goldilocks and wrote their own versions. They have also written a discussion, looking at the question ‘should Goldilocks be in trouble?’ They have learnt all about rhetorical questions and subordinate clauses and have applied them accurately in their writing.
In maths, the children have been looking at different methods for addition and subtraction using numbers to 1000.
In RE, they have enjoyed learning about being called by God. The children learnt what a prophet was and their Holy stories from the bible.
This week, year 3 have been focusing on Black History and the theme ‘Saluting our sisters’. The children focused on Mary Seacole and they have produced some excellent diary entries and art work!
The children have been recognised for their resilience this half term and have been showed good listening skills while working and being kind to each other.
